  • Description

THE MYSTERY OF A DAMAGED SOVIET SUBMARINE IN THE MEDITERRANEAN HAS DEEPENED WITH THE PASSAGE OF A CONVOY OF SOVIET WARSHIPS THROUGH THE STRAITS OF GIBRALTAR. AIRCRAFT WHICH HAVE FLOWN OVER THE AREA WHERE THE SUBMARINE WAS LAST SEEN REPORT NO SIGN OF THE VESSEL, ONLY OIL STICKS ON THE WATER.

THE SOVIET CONVOY WAS APPARENTLY HEADING TOWARD THE DAMAGED SUBMARINE WHICH WAS LAST SEEN ANCHORED OFF THE SPANISH MOROCCAN PORT OF MELILLA.

THE UNITED STATES SIXTH FLEET FIRST SIGHTED THE DAMAGED 2-THOUSAND TON SUBMARINE ON JANUARY THE 15TH. IT HAD ABOUT 25 FEET (EIGHT METRES) OF ITS BOW MISSING, PROBABLY SHORN OFF IN A COLLISION. THE SUBMARINE, OF THE 'F' CLASS, WHICH THE SOVIET NAVY HAS PUT INTO SERVICE SINCE 1960, IS BELIEVED TO HAVE UNDERGONE EMERGENCY REPAIRS AT SEA WITH THE HELP OF OTHER RUSSIAN SHIPS.

NOW, THE SOVIET HELICOPTER CARRIER MOSKVA, TWO MISSILE DESTROYERS AND FOUR SUBMARINES, HAVE SAILED INTO THE MEDITERRANEAN BOUND, APPARENTLY, FOR THE AREA WHERE THE DAMAGED SUBMARINE WAS LAST REPORTED.

HOWEVER THE RUSSIANS HAVE GIVEN NO DETAILS ABOUT HOW THE SUBMARINE CAME TO BE DAMAGED AND THEY HAVE NOT ASKED THE NATO OR AMERICAN FLEETS IN THE AREA FOR HELP.
