  • Description

PRESIDENT KENNETH KAUNDA OF ZAMBIA MADE A SIX-HOUR STOP-OVER IN ABIDJAN, CAPITAL OF THE IVORY COAST, YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) ON HIS WAY HOME TO LUSAKA AFTER VISITS TO FRANCE AND ITALY. HE HAD TALKS IN ABIDJAN WITH PRESIDENT HOUPHOUET-BOIGNY OF THE IVORY COAST.

IT WAS EXPECTED THAT PRESIDENT KAUNDA'S TALKS WITH PRESIDENT HOUPHOUET-BOIGNY WOULD INCLUDE THE NIGERIAN SITUATION. BOTH ZAMBIA AND THE IVORY COAST HAVE RECOGNISED THE SOVEREIGNTY OF BIAFRA, THE BREAKAWAY EASTERN REGION OF NIGERIA, AND OPPOSED THE RECENT RESOLUTION OF THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY (OAU) SUPPORTING THE NIGERIAN FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.

AFTER THE OAU SUMMIT MEETING, WHICH WAS IN ALGIERS, PRESIDENT KAUNDA MADE AN OFFICIAL VISIT TO FRANCE. HIS FRENCH VISIT INCLUDED A CALL AT THE PALACE OF VERSAILLES, THE HOME OF THE FRENCH KINGS UNTIL THE REVOLUTION OF 1789, ABOUT 12 MILES (19 KMS) FROM PARIS. THE ZAMBIAN LEADER THEN WENT TO ROME ON A BRIEF PRIVATE VISIT.
