  • Description

The tenth inter-American Cardiology Congress opened in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, on Sunday (5 September).

SYNOPSIS: About 4000 leading medical scientists from South and North America are taking part. Doctors from Germany, Spain, Austria, England, Italy and Switzerland are also attending. The inter-American conferences started in 1946 and since then there have been major achievements in the treatment of heart disease throughout the world.

The congress-opened by Venezuela's President Carlos Andres Peres - was organised by the Inter American Society of Cardiology and the Venezuelan Cardiological Society. In welcoming the delegates Mr. Peres said the Congress must be regarded as a major scientific event. During the week-long conference it would provide an opportunity for some of the leading authorities on cardiology to exchange ideas on the never-ending fight against heart disease. As in most western nations the disease was one of the most common killers in Venezuela and its prevention was of paramount importance, he said.

Throughout the world, 1976 is being regarded as Cardiological Year. Similar congresses are being held this year in Europe, and in the Asian-Pacific region. Many doctors are taking time off from busy schedules to attend the conferences - an indication of the worldwide concern there is over the problem. Although major steps have been taken in the eradication of heart disease, particularly in surgery, the education of people to prevent its onset is top priority for cardiologists everywhere.
