    TENSION GREW IN CYPRUS TODAY (MONDAY) WHEN NEWS SPREAD THAT TURKISH-CYPRIOTS WERE HOLDING FOUR SENIOR GREEK-CYPRIOT POSTAL OFFICIALS IN NICOSIA. THE MEN WERE RELEASED UNHARMED BUT BRITISH PATROLS WERE REINFORCED IN THE AREA.

    MEANWHILE, OTHER MEMBERS OF THE BRITISH FORCES HAVE CONTINUED THEIR VISITS TO OUTLYING VILLAGES BRINGING WITH THEM FLOUR, TEA, SUGAR, MARGARINE AND BISCUITS. HELICOPTERS HAVE ALSO BEEN USED TO FERRY FOOD TO ISOLATED AREAS.

    IN NICOSIA TODAY A GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN SAID PRESIDENT MAKARIOS HAD ACCEPTED A PROPOSAL FOR SENDING AN U.N. OBSERVER TO CYPRUS. FORTYEIGHT HOURS EARLIER THE REQUEST FOR AN OBSERVER HAD BEEN MADE BY BRITAIN, GREECE AND TURKEY.

    WELL-INFORMED SOURCES HAVE ALSO REPORTED THAT THE TALKS ON CYPRUS WILL OPEN IN LONDON ON JANUARY 13, THE DATE ORIGINALLY PLANNED.
