  • Description

Boys and girls from ten different countries - spending a week's holiday in England from August 5 to 11 as their prize for winning the International Milk Day Essay Competition - had a barbecue in the park at Woburn Abbey, Bedfordshire, U.K. on August 8. Their host was the Duke of Bedford, whose Home Farm at Woburn is famous for its prize Chartley cattle.

The six girls and four boys, who come from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Luxembourg, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Great Britain, were shown round the Abbey by the Duke.

Then, sitting around the Dining Table at which members of the English Royal Family dine when staying with the Duke, they were shown some of the Abbey's treasures, whilst Mari-Claire Hubert of Belgium and Wilhelm van Keeken of Holland tried on the hats worn by Dukes and Duchesses of Bedford at Coronation ceremonies.

Afterwards, they went to a Hertfordshire farm to enjoy a traditional farmhouse tea.

During their visit to England, the young prizewinners - who arrived in London under the auspices of the National Milk Publicity Council - saw the sights of London and visited Windsor and Hampton Court.
