  • Description

With only a few days to go until the beginning of the East-West Summit conference in Paris, May 16, final touches are being added to the conference buildings and meeting places of the four leaders, their Foreign Ministers, their staff, and the international Press.

At the Elysee Palace, the Dining Hall is ready for luncheons and dinners to be given to the four Heads of State and Government. The Ambassadors' Room is awaiting them for after-dinner talks, and the Chamber of the Council of Ministers on the first floor has been prepared for the actual Summit talks. When the Heads of State meet here they will sit at a table 10ft in diameter. When the Foreign Ministers are present there will be a 13 ft table. And when the experts are called in yet a third table, 16 1/2 ft in diameter, will be used.

The Palais de Chaillot, former NATO headquarters, has been transformed into a central Press office, since the Summit meeting will be covered by more correspondents than any other international conference since the war. About 3,000 journalists, including 800 French and foreign resident reporters in Paris, and 300 television commentators, representing 50 nations have been accredited so far.

Telecommunications naturally play a big part in a conference of such dimensions. Special telephone installations connect Paris by 150 lines with different parts of the globe. Television is standing by with cameras, recording studios, film developing and cutting facilities, and there is closed-circuit TV for internal communication.

At the Quai d'Orsay, the "Salon de l'Horloge" - the Clock Room - will be used for meetings of the Foreign Ministers. The western Ministers are expected to hold a last pre-Summit conference on May 14.

Finally, separate offices have been prepared for the three visiting leaders - President Eisenhower, Prime Minister Macmillan and Premier Khrushchev.
