Background: JOHN MCCORMACK OF GLASGOW, SCOTLAND, LOST HIS EUROPEAN MIDDLEWEIGHT BOXING TITLE IN A BOUT AT COPENHAGEN, DENMARK, ON FEB 8, BECAUSE HE HIT CHRIS CHRISTENSEN OF DENMARK, WHILE THE REFEREE WAS STILL COUNTING.

WHEN THE END CAME IN THE FOURTH ROUND, THE NEW CHAMPION WAS STRETCHED SENSELESS, FACE DOWN ON THE RING APRON, WITH ONLY ONE FOOT INSIDE THE ROPES.MCCORMACK SENT CHRISTENSEN THROUGH THE ROPES WITH A LEFT TO THE JAW AS THE DANE WAS RISING FROM A SHORT COUNT.

ANGRY SPECTATORS STORMED THE RING AS THE REFEREE APPEARED TO SIGNAL A WIN TO MCCORMACK, WHO WAVED HIS GLOVES ABOVE HIS HEAD IN A GESTURE OF VICTORY.AFTER SOME MINUTES OF CHAOS, THE REFEREE DECLARED THE DANE THE WINNER AS HE LAY PRONE IN HIS CORNER.MR.A.PHILLIPS, MCCORMACK'S MANAGER, PROTESTED VIGOROUSLY, BUT WAS TOLD BY THE REFEREE THAT HIS BOXER WAS DISQUALIFIED BECAUSE HE HIT CHRISTENSEN WHILE THE COUNT FOR THE FIRST KNOCKDOWN WAS BEING TAKEN.

MCCORMACK, HEAVIER BY 10 POUNDS, FOUGHT WELL.HE SENT CHRISTENSEN TO THE FLOOR TWICE, DOMINATED ON THE FIRST THREE ROUNDS, AND WAS WELL AHEAD ON POINTS.HE WILL HAVE A CHANCE TO REGAIN THE TITLE, AS THE CONTRACT FOR THE FIGHT CONTAINED A 90-DAY RETURN BOUT CLAUSE.
