  • Description

Tanzania, one of the first countries to have recognised the state of Guinea-Bissau proclaimed by anti-Portuguese guerrillas, has been urging 135 member states of the United Nations to follow its lead.

Foreign Minister John Maliciously told the U.N. General Assembly on Friday (September 28), that the proclamation of independence provided a historic test case of whether the United Nations really supported the ideals of self-determination, independence and freedom.

At the time of Mr. Molecela's speech, 13 countries had given official recognition to Guinea Bissau.
