  • Description

To cut pollution and lower petrol costs the authorities operating the National Parks in Washington are experimenting with battery operated vehicles. Results so far have been encouraging.

A spokesman for the Park authorities said that the battery operated equipment was extremely inexpensive. Electric power costs about a third to half a cent per mile. A comparable vehicle running on petrol only does about ten miles to the gallon ... and with the rising price of oil and petrol this is a significant saving.

The incident of brush fires will also be reduced during the summer months.

In other arts of America similar changeovers have been made. Conventionally powered vehicles were stopped completely in the famous Yosemite National Park in California more than three years ago. It was the results there and the results of surveys taken in Washington that brought about the decision for the changeover.
