SPACE CENTRE, HOUSTON - Three American astronauts operate their hobbled spaceship ahead with a burst of rocket rower Tuesday to hurry them home before their vital and already short supplies of water, oxygen and electricity run out.

They borrowed the rocket power from the prime engine of their little moon lander. For Apollo I pilot James A Lovell Jr. Fred Haise Jr. and Jack L. Swigert it mean cutting their flight time by ten hours.

"Shutdown," called Lovell at [illegible] p.m. BST as the engine cut off. "Now we went to power down as soon as possible."
The firing came with the spacecraft on the way home, [illegible] miles from the moon, and nearly a quarter-million miles from earth. They were on direct course for a 12.15 pm, BST splashdown Friday in the Pacific.

Meanwhile experts on the ground may have zeroed in on what caused the sudden loss of [illegible] night and the subsequent failure of electricity air producing fuel cells.

The best theory, they said, was that there was a short circuit in the supercold oxygen storage tank allowing pressures to build up over 1600 pounds per square inch and causing the oxygen tank to rupture.

That could explain the explosion heard by the astronauts that set off all their trophies.
