  • Description

AMPHIBIOUS VEHICLES PLAYED A LARGE PART IN AN ANGLO-DANISH MILITARY EXERCISE WHICH TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) IN NORTH JUTLAND, DENMARK.

UNITS THE ROYAL CORPS OF TRANSPORT ATTACHED TO THE BRITISH ARMY OF THE RHINE (B.A.O.R.) AND FROM THE DANISH ARMY WERE EMPLOYED. FOR THE PURPOSE OF THE EXERCISE, IT WAS ASSUMED THAT THE ROAD BRIDGE OVER LIM FJORD, NEAR ALBORG, WHICH LINKS NORTH AND SOUTH JUTLAND, HAD BEEN BLOWN UP. MILITARY EQUIPMENT, INCLUDING ARMS AND AMMUNITION, HAD THEREFORE TO BE TAKEN ACROSS THE FJORD BY STALWART AMPHIBIOUS VEHICLES. EACH STALWART CAN CARRY FIVE TONS OF CARGO AT A SPEED OF FIVE KNOTS. ON LAND, THE STALWARTS APPROACH A SPEED OF 40-MILES AN HOUR (64-KILOMETRES).

STRONG WINDS MADE THE CROSSING FROM HALS, ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE FJORD, TO EGENSE DIFFICULT, BUT THE OPERATIONS WERE COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY.
