  • Description

Pope Paul symbolically washed the feet of 12 children from Asia, Africa, Europe and South America on Thursday (27 March) as the Roman Catholic Church's Holy Week celebrations near its climax.

Dressed in white robes, the Pontiff bent down to touch the feet of the children -- all from the Citta Dei Ragazzi (Children's City) orphan's home in Rome -- following a tradition begun by Christ before the Last Supper.

Before the washing-of-the-font ceremony, Papa Paul conducted a service attended by 20,000 people in St. Peter's Basilica.

The Holy Week celebrations mark the climax of the church's jubilee Holy Year, opened by the Pope on Christmas Eve, and held once every 25 years.
