  • Description

Europeans in the Rhodesian Federation are closing their ranks behind Sir Roy Welensky, the Prime Minister, in their determination to resist Monckton Commission recommendations for loosening federal ties and accelerating African political progress.

In both Northern and Southern Rhodesia anonymous farming and business interests are backing a drive to unite European support behind Sir Roy. A rally was held at Lusaka, Oct 4, and others were planned for Kitwe and Salisbury.

More than 600 people attended the Lusaka meeting, where speakers included a farmer, two businessmen and a lawyer, presided over by a city councillor. The object of this and other rallies was to bring about a temporary political truce and if necessary prepare a covenant to be taken to London.

Time and again the British Government was accused of planning to sell out the Europeans of Northern Rhodesia to the Africans, and there was much applause when one speaker declared: "Tomorrow one of our neighbours has a referendum on a republic. If it was in Northern Rhodesia there would be a republic by six o'clock tomorrow night." Another speaker said: "We want a sovereign Federation. We are sick to death of visiting politicians, of having our affairs debated in the House of Commons and having a shadow of the House of Commons in this Territory which goes by the name of the Northern Rhodesia Government."
