  • Description

In the capitals of the World, official and unofficial condolences and tributes have continued to pour in to Chinese embassies, following the death of Chairman Mao Tse-Tung.

SYNOPSIS: In Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, many people have called at the Chinese Embassy there to sign the book of condolence. When the death of the great Chinese leader was announced, flags on official buildings were ordered to be flown at half-mast by the government of President Carlos Andres Perez. The government also ordered that there should be three days of official mourning. The Embassy received many wreaths from official organisations and from ordinary people throughout the capital.

The Chinese Charges d'Affaires and members of his staff were on hand to receive the tributes and condolences, and to thank individuals personally.

There were similar scenes at the Chinese Embassy in the British capital, London. A tribute from the Government said Mao would be remembered as a man of great vision and a thinker with a profound sense of history. The Foreign Secretary, Mr. Anthony Crosland, represented the Government when he arrived to sign the book of condolences.

The British Government's statement went on to say that China's position in the World today was a memorial to Chairman Mao's unique achievements. It described Chairman Mao as one of the outstanding leaders of this century, who had devoted himself wholeheartedly to China and the Chinese people. The Queen also sent a message of condolence to the Chinese National People's Congress. Britain's national newspapers all paid high tribute to the leader of Chinese Communism.
