  • Description

The future of Israel's settlements in occupied Arab territory has become uncertain during the negotiations for a lasting Middle East peace agreement.

The areas----captured by Israel during the 1967 war----are expected to play key part in the peace negotiations.

Israeli settlers in Syria's Golan Heights, Egypt's Sinai Desert and Geza Strip and along the Jordan River have been holding emergency meetings to discuss their future, and to put pressure on the Israeli Government not to give up the settlements.

Settlers along the Jordan River have expressed concern about the Jordan ??an plan for a disengagement of force along the river.

Jordan has proposed that Israel should withdraw 16 kilometers (9.9 miles) from the 1967 ceasefire line. But the Israeli settlers have said this will mean abandoning almost all the settlements in the Jordan Valley.

The Israeli Deputy Premier, Yigal Allon, has said Israel is prepared to negotiate a disengagement of forces with Jordan. But he said Israel would have to hold the Jordan Valley, as well as the north-east sector of the Judaen Desert housing most of the border settlements.
