  • Description

A SPOKESMEN FOR THE IVORY COAST GOVERNMENT HAS DEPLORED THE CURRENT STUDENT AGITATION AND RIOTING AROUND THE WORLD, DESCRIBING IT AS "THE MALAISE THAT IS SWEEPING THE WORLD'S SCHOOLS." THE SPOKESMAN, M. AUGUST DENISE, A MINISTER OF STATE, WAS SPEAKING AT THE PRIZE GIVING DAY CEREMONY AT THE LYCEE TECHNIQUE SCHOOL IN ABIDJAN ON THURSDAY.

THURSDAY WAS THE LAST DAY IN ABIDJAN BEFORE THE STUDENTS WENT ON HOLIDAY. THE PRIZE GIVING WAS WATCHED BY FOREIGN AMBASSADORS. THE PRIZES, ALL IN BOOK FORM, WERE PROVIDED BY THE EMBASSIES AS WELL AS THE IVORY COAST MINISTERS AND BIG BUSINESS.

BEFORE HANDING OUT THE PRIZES, M. DENISE GAVE THE ASSEMBLED STUDENTS A "PEP TALK" ABOUT THEIR MISSION IN LIFE. "THE FUTURE OF THE COUNTRY DEPENDS ON YOU," HE SAID. "YOU STUDY TODAY IN ORDER THAT TOMORROW YOU CAN HELP RUN THE COUNTRY."
SO MANY STUDENTS FAILED THIS YEAR'S BACCALAUREATE (HIGH SCHOOL) EXAMINATION THAT THE CANDIDATES WILL BE ALLOWED A SECOND TRY. ONLY 147 STUDENTS -- A THIRD OF THEM FRENCH -- GOT THROUGH THE ORAL TESTS OUT OF A TOTAL OF ABOUT 1,000 STUDENTS WHO SAT FOR THE EXAMINATIONS.

IT WAS ANNOUNCED YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) THAT AN INTER-MINISTERIAL COMMISSION HEADED BY PRESIDENT FELIX HOUPHOUET-BOIGNY WILL BE SET UP TO REVIEW EDUCATION THROUGHOUT THE IVORY COAST. PARENTS, TEACHERS AND STUDENTS WILL BE ASSOCIATED WITH THE WORK OF THE COMMISSION.

THE DECISION TO EXAMINE THE WHOLE QUESTION OF EDUCATION WAS TAKEN FOLLOWING THE RISE OF WORLD STUDENT AGITATION, WHICH HAS SO FAR NOT SPREAD TO THE IVORY COAST. M. DENISE TOLD THE ABIDJAN STUDENTS AT THURSDAY PRIZE GIVING THAT IVORY COAST STUDENTS WERE TO BE CONGRATULATED FOR "AVOIDING CONTAMINATION BY THE STORMS WHICH HAVE HIT MANY COUNTRIES."
PRESIDENT HOUPHOUET-BOIGNY IS ALSO TAKING PREVENTIVE ACTION ON THE LABOUR FRONT TO AVOID THE KIND OF LABOUR UNREST WHICH FOLLOWED THE STUDENT AGITATION IN FRANCE AND SENEGAL. HE IS AT PRESENT PRESIDING OVER INTENSIVE CONSULTATION IN ABIDJAN ON WAGE CLAIMS BY WORKERS.
