  • Description

Taiwan, an island of 14 million people threatened with expulsion from the United Nations, was clam on Monday (October 18) as the China debate opened in the General Assembly. Underneath the calm, however, there appeared to be -- according to news reports -- a split in opinions The older generation on the island, many of whom were refugees from the People's Republic of China, remain committed to the idea that Taiwan's Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek is the only acceptable leader to the people of both countries. Some younger Taiwanese, however, were questioning this view. But despite the differing opinions, and the threat of diplomatic isolation, the people of Taiwan were confident of one factor -- the economy, which is one of the strongest in Asia with an annual growth rate of ten per cent. This film, from VISNEWS Hong Kong Bureau, takes a look at the situation there on the day that world ambassadors began one of the most important debates in the history of the United Nations.
