Background: The Royal Dutch Navy submarine "Tonijn" is of the 3 cylinder type and a ocean going submarine, it is a exclusive dutch design, made by Engineer M.F. Gunning, build at shipyard Wilton Feyenoord in Amsterdam and completed in 1966.

    Length 79,5 m. wide 7,84 m. depth 4,8 m. 1140 ton, submerged 1800 ton 2 diesel engines of 1550 apk, speed 14,5 miles/hour, underwater electrical 2200 apk, speed 17 miles/hour, weapons 8 torpedoes launching chambers, 4 in the bow, 4 a stern, maximum diving depth of 980 feet.

The 3 cylinder middle class submarine can operate on a greater depth than a conventional type of the same class.

In the two lower cylinders are the engine rooms and batteries, 3rd cylinder placed above the two others is the living cylinder, and store the 8 torpedo launching chambers, the torpedo's can be placed in their launching chambers also when submarine is operating underwater.

This type of submarine can be underwater on great depth, about 80 hours, with the use of his air inlet installation "Sp???" or Snuiver apart from fuel and supply for the crew, unlimited.

For the 64 men crew is good comfort, instead of their types of submarine everyone has his own berth and cupboard.

The commander, Lieutenant H.M. Ort is very happy with his ship, he is 1,87 m. high and can walk freely throughout his ship.

South Africa had great interest in this type of submarine, bud at the moment it is impossible to see if the new Dutch parliament will give their agreement, to have the submarines for South Africa, build in Holland.

An unofficial information that South Africa also has his eye on the France submarine, of the Daphne type, witch is a smaller ship with less possibilities.
