TRANSCRIPT: SEQ 2: JUAN MARI-BRASS: Finally, we wish to announce that we have requested the Revolutionary Government of Cuba to request the inclusion of a new item in the Agenda of the coming session of the General Assembly: the discussion of the case of Puerto Rico. We are sure that such an initiative will receive the backing of all of the progressive governments that have been, and are, in favour of the total and unconditional end of colonialism in all its forms and manifestations in the present-day world. Thus, the General Assembly should make the decision that the Committee of 24 has been evading for almost a decade; and thus the people of Puerto Rico will know what to do regarding the possibility that this international organism fulfils its duty, that which the Charter and the many anti-colonial resolutions imposes on it. With the backing or without the backing of the United Nations, there is no doubt in our minds that Puerto Rico will achieve its independence and national liberation as a result of the ever-increasing struggle of our people and of the solidarity of the anti-imperialist forces in the world. The United Nations must define its position regarding the case of Puerto Rico; this is what we ask of the United Nations in the name of our people.

Background: Senor Juan Mari-Bras, Secretary General of the Puerto Rico Pro Independence Movement, said at a press conference in the United Nations Building in New York on Friday (July 23), that his organisation had requested the Revolutionary Government of Cuba to press for Puerto Rican independence to be included in the agenda for the coming Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

He was introduced at the press conference by Cuba's Permanent Representative at the UN, Ambassador Ricardo Alarcon Quesada.

Senor Mari-Brass, speaking in Spanish, expressed his thanks to Cuba for helping his movement to their condemnation of what they termed the "oppressive colonial regime that the United States imposes on our country."
He forecast a huge anti-American parade of Puerto Rican Independence movements when President Nixon visits the country in September.
