  • Description

The first ever overland trip from Athens to Moscow began when Paul Delmer of London, and his wife 26-year-old Patricia of Hornchurch, in Essex, and three of their four children, plus two technicians, John Rogers, of Stanmore, Middlesex, and Christopher Denning of Cowley, set off in an Austin car, towing the mobile home out of Athens today.

The route will be through Salonika, thence to Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Rumania, Hungary, Czechalovakia, and Poland to the USSR.

The Delmers first came into the public eye on television in May 1954 prior to their departure from England. The party travelled across, the Sahara, and through trouble torn North Africa. In Algeria they were convoyed by the friendly Foreign Legion (Baby Susan has the distinction of having her napkin changed by a Legionnaire who had undertaken a bit of baby-sitting)
Susan was born in Morocco on route, and began her globe trotting on the very day of her birth. She has yet to make acquaintance with her home country, England. The other children are Paul, aged 5, born in Romford, Essex, Andres, 3., born at Torrington, in Devon. Monica was flown home from Athens to continue school in England.

With visas for all Iron Curtain countries, the Delmers have indeed a privilege rarely accorded to travellers in that part of the world.

Apparently it all began when Delmer, then in Morocco, wrote directly to Kruschev seeking permission to tour Russia by car and caravan.
