    QUEEN SALOTE, THE COLOURFUL AND POPULAR RULER OF TONGA, DIED TODAY (WEDNESDAY) IN AN AUCKLAND HOSPITAL. SHE WAS 65. SHE HAD A TYPE OF CANCER AND WAS ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL ON SUNDAY WITH A CHEST AILMENT AND PLEURISY. THERE WERE FEARS FOR HER HEALTH WHEN SHE ARRIVED IN AUCKLAND LAST MONTH FOR HER ANNUAL CHECK UP. SHE HAD BEEN RESTING IN HER AUCKLAND HOME BEFORE ENTERING HOSPITAL LAST WEEKEND.

    LATE IN 1953 QUEEN ELIZABETH AND PRINCE PHILIP VISITED THE SIX-FOOT-THREE-INCH QUEEN IN TONGA ON THEIR COMMONWEALTH TOUR. ONLY LAST MONTH QUEEN ELIZABETH MADE SALOTE THE FIRST DAME GRAND CROSS OF THE ORDER OF ST. MICHAEL AND ST. GEORGE.
