The first meeting of the Council of Ministers of the newly-formed West African Economic Community will b held in Dakar, Semegal, next year. This was decided on Thursday (4 May) a the final meeting of the eight-day West Africa Sub-regional Conference on Economic Cooperation in Accra, when representatives of 12 West African countries signed articles of agreement establishing the Community.
The seven articles of association set up a n interim Council of Ministers to negotiate a treaty establishing the Community. The object of the Community is to further maximum possible interchange of goods and services between its members nations while eliminating customs and trade barriers.
The interim Council is empowered to establish a provisional secretariat, and interim economic committee and any other subsidiary bodies. The council will cease t exist when the treaty comes into force.
Members of the Community will be able to take part in other economic co-operation measure - inside and outside the new Community - providing the measures do not prejudice the aims the of the African group.
Brigadier Africa, chairman of the conference and leader of the Ghana delegation said the ceremony marked an important step in the history of the African Continent.
