Background: A heavy cordon of police and Carabiniere sealed off streets leading to the United States Embassy in Rome yesterday (Wednesday). The Embassy was the target for thousands of demonstrators protesting against American intervention in Cambodia.
The demonstration had been called by the Italian Communist and Socialist Parties.
Carrying anti-American placards and singing revolutionary songs, the demonstrators formed a mile-long procession through the centre of Rome.
Their confrontation with police -- drawn up across the Via Veneto to bar the way to the Embassy -- went off without major violence.
