• Short Summary

In Namibia polling continues in elections called by South Africa, but not recognised by the United Nations.

  • Description

SV ZOOM INTO CU interview with SWAPO Mr Mokganedi Thalabanello

THALABANELLO: "Well there are two things involved here. One is that we believe that South Africa is party to the conflict together with SWAPO. It is not possible for the party which is also in that conflict to be in the periphery. The other is that we have been involved in the one-and-a-half year-old diplomatic exercise, were involved in the formulation and the final adaptation of the Resolution No.435; so we don't see why we should deviate from this."

INTERVIEWER: "Your opponents say of course, that the reason you don't want to take part in the elections is because you won't win."

THLABANELLO: "I think that's a very stupid argument, because the mere fact that they are trying to find ways of not having a fair election, already indicates that they are afraid of having an open election where SWAPO is definitely going to win."

INTERVIEWER: "What is your message to the people of Namibia? Do you expect them to vote this week, or not?"

THLABANELLO: "We are calling upon our people to boycott these elections simply because by putting their cross there, they are actually voting for isolation and everything that goes with that."
