  • Description

Security precautions to protect British schoolchildren in Aden have been considerably tightened during the last week following the threats of retaliation on the part of FLOSY, the Federation for the Liberation of South Yemen. But officials still fear there are far too many loopholes in the security system - as this film of Khormasker Primary School indicates.

Casualties in the fighting between FLOSY and a rival nationalist organisation have risen during the last two days to five dead and two injured. An eleven-year-old Arab boy was recently killed by a grenade thrown at a British security patrol.

Since the FLOSY threats of retaliation, buses taking children to school have been accompanied by armoured jeeps. Barbed wire surrounds the school itself, and guards patrol the entrances.

But danger is still present. The Khormasker School stands only ten yards from the main road, and, despite the four feet of barbed wire, any weapon thrown over it from a passing vehicle could do a lot of damage. The children's lives are still threatened by the fear of enemy grenades.
