  • Description

French Finance Minister Valery Giscard d'Estaing, architect of Frence's economic successes over the past decade, today (Monday, 6 April) entered the race for the vacant French Presidency.

Announcing his candidacy, he portrayed himself as the late President pompidou's personal choice as a successor. And he appealed directly to all French voters -- except socialist-communist supporters -- to carry him to the Presidency with an enlarged majority.

However, M. Giscard d'Estaing's entry into an already overcrowded arena could seriously split the vote of the Gaullist-led majority. Pitted against him on the government side are former Gaullist Prime Minister Jacques Chaban-Delmas and liberal Guallist Edgar Faure. Both of these opponents had rushed to announce their candidacy within hours of President Pompidou's death.

    M. Giscard d'Eastain preferred to allow a decent period of mourning to elapse before joining the presidential race, as he stressed in his speech today at the Town Hall in Cahamaliers, the little town in the Auvergne region of central France where he is mayor.
