    THE GREEK PRIME MINISTER, MR. GEORGES PAPANDREOU, FLEW TO CORFU YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) TO SIGN THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE OF THE GREEK ROYAL BABY, ALEXIA. AT THE SAME TIME THE PRIME MINISTER APPARENTLY AVERTED A POLITICAL CRISIS WHICH HAS THREATENED GREECE FOR THE PAST TWO WEEKS.

    NEWS THAT THE ROYAL BABY HAD BEEN NAMED ALEXIA CAME TODAY WHEN PRAYERS WERE OFFERED TO CELEBRATE THE BIRTH YESTERDAY. THE GIRL IS THE FIRST CHILD BORN TO KING CONSTANTINE AND 18-YEAR-OLD QUEEN ANNE-MARIE.

    THE ROYAL BIRTH CERTIFICATE WAS TO BE SIGNED LATER TODAY BY THE PRIME MINISTER AND THE MINISTER FOR JUSTICE, MR. BACAPOULOS.

    MR. PAPANDREOU TOOK ADVANTAGE OF HIS VISIT TO THE ISLAND OF CORFU TO DISCUSS WITH KING CONSTANTINE THE POLITICAL SITUATION IN GREECE AND A CONFLICT OF OPINION BETWEEN THE KING AND HIMSELF.

    THE PRIME MINISTER FOR SOME TIME HAD BEEN SEEKING AN AUDIENCE WITH KING CONSTANTINE TO PRESS HIS DEMANDS FOR THE REMOVAL OF THE GREEK DEFENCE MINISTER, MR. PETROS GAROUFALIAS, WHO HAS ALLEGEDLY BLOCKED ATTEMPTS TO REMOVE FASCIST ELEMENTS FROM THE ARMED SERVICES.

    THE KING WAS REPORTED TO HAVE OPPOSED THE MOVE, AND MR. GAROUFALIAS, WHO IS SAID TO ENJOY HIGH ESTEEM IN THE GREEK ROYAL COURT, REFUSED TO RESIGN. HE IS A MEMBER OF THE RIGHT WING GROUP OF THE GOVERNMENT.

    MR. PAPANDREOU AND KING CONSTANTINE MET TODAY FOR 90 MINUTES.

    LATER THE PRIME MINISTER TOLD REPORTERS: "COMPLETE IDENTITY OF VIEWS REGARDING THE FUNCTIONING OF THE REGIME HAS BEEN NOTED. I WILL REPORT ON THE CONTENT OF MY TALK WITH THE KING TO THE CABINET WHICH WILL MEET TOMORROW." HE REFUSED TO SAY IF KING CONSTANTINE HAD SIGNED A DEGREE TO REMOVE MR. GAROUFALIAS FROM OFFICE.

    UNDER THE GREEK CONSTITUTION THE PRIME MINISTER MAY DISMISS ANY MINISTER, BUT THE KING'S SIGNATURE IS NEEDED TO FORMALLY CARRY OUT THE DISMISSAL.
