Background: INTRODUCTION Tunisia won a place in the third round of the World Cup when they held Algeria to a 1-all draw in Algiers on Monday (28 February). The match was the second leg of Algeria and Tunisia's World Cup African group one qualifying tie. Tunisia had won the first leg 2-0.
SYNOPSIS: The Tunisians concentrated on protecting their two goal advantage. They played strictly defensive football -- pushing only one or two men forward and trying long shots from well outside the Algerian penalty area.
Playing in front of a partisan 100,000 strong home crowd, the Algerians adopted exactly the opposite approach.
They attacked from the kick-off and at every opportunity. In the 33rd minute their efforts were rewarded when right-winger Baileche headed home a cross from the left after a goal mouth melee.
At halftime the score was still 1-0. Tunisia kept defending and trying ambitious long range shots. But they had little effect on the Algerian defence and the home side kept pushing men forward.
In the second half the match deteriorated into a series of minor fouls and scuffles and the Algerians became desperate to score another goal and level the tie.
However, the visitors defence held firm and they were able to break up Algerian attacks, seemingly at will.
Then, a minute from full time the Tunisians clinched the tie. Ben Assiza slammed home an equaliser from 15 metres out.
Tunisia now meet Guinea-Bissau in the next elimination round.
