  • Description

American President Eisenhower viewed the first man-made object ever to return from space August 15 when United States airmen brought the 300-pound capsule, ejected from the Discover satellite, for his inspection at the White House in Washington. The Secretary of Defence, Thomas Gates, and Air Force Chief of Staff, General White, removed the cover of the capsule and showed the mechanism to the President.

Late August 11, the United States Air Force discovered the capsule after it had been ejected while the Discoverer satellite - in Polar orbit - was making its 17th pass over the Aleutian islands. It was picked up some 330 miles north-west of Hawaii by a helicopter aided by a Navy frogman.

The United States plan to put a chimpanzee into orbit in a Discoverer satellite within the next month and attempt to bring him back to earth alive.
