    THE BLOCK, ONE OF A LARGE NUMBER OF IDENTICAL UNITS IN A CITY-SPONSORED HOUSING DEVELOPMENT FOR FORMER SLUM DWELLERS, COLLAPSED AROUND BREAKFAST TIME SENDING TONS OF DEBRIS CASCADING DOWN THE STEEP HILLSIDE ON WHICH THE APARTMENTS PERCHED.

    ARRIVING AT THE SCENE OF THE DISASTER, RESCUE WORKERS HEARD FAINT CRIES FROM BENEATH THE MOUNDS OF CONCRETE RAISING HOPES THAT SOME OF THOSE BURIED MIGHT STILL BE FOUND ALIVE. BUT LATER, AS WAS FEARED, MOST WERE CRUSHED OR HAD DIED FROM SUFFOCATION.

    HUNDREDS OF POLICE, CIVILIAN AND MILITARY RESCUE UNITS WORKED WITH PICK AXES, OXY-CETYLENE TORCHES AND PNEUMATIC DRILLS TO BREAK THEIR WAY THROUGH THE RUBBLE. AMID THE DEBRIS THERE WERE SMALL PILES OF CLOTHING, BEDDING AND HOUSEHOLD UTENSILS.

    THROUGH A SMALL HOLE GOUGED BENEATH ONE OF THE CONCRETE BLOCKS, SOLDIERS DISCOVERED A SMALL BOY TRAPPED WITH OTHER BADLY INJURED VICTIMS.

    POLICE SAID ABOUT SIXTY PEOPLE WERE IN THE APARTMENT ITSELF AND MORE THAN TEN OTHERS IN THREE ADJACENT HOUSES WHICH WERE CRUSHED WHEN IT COLLAPSED.
