  • Description

The steady tramp of 16,000 pairs of feet on the march has shaken the town of Nijmegen, Netherlands, this week (19 -22 July???). The occasion was the annual Nijmegen marches when people from 30 countries gathered to put their feet to the test.

The week provides a great excuse for Nijmegen to take a carnival atmosphere with bands and a colourful night life. But how does one cope with such hectic going on after an exhausting day collecting foot blisters.....?
SYNOPSIS: There are some soldiers among the walkers, but these marches are all in the cause of promoting international friendship and understanding.

Japan entered a team for the first time. And elsewhere, the new Israeli ambassador to the Netherlands, Mr Shlomo Argov, was marching with his fellow countrymen.

During the four days of this giant get-together, many people will have tramped over more than 100 miles (160 kms) of road. There are no victors at this game. But those taking part get commemorative medals.

It was in 1909 that the Royal Netherlands League for Physical Culture started to sponsor the walks. Since then, their popularity has spread far and wide.

The Japanese contingent demonstrates the marches' appeal. The mayor of Nijmegen, who launched this year's event, praised the entrants for their sporting spirit.
