SYNOPSIS: The world champion, who is playing the white pieces, made the West German's first move on Thursday (30 September) at the Minsk Hotel in Moscow, where he was on a brief stay before leaving for Leningrad. A panel of West Germany's leading players has been set up to choose the best proposals sent in and they will also give expert comment as the game goes on. The champion replied to the German move with orthodox tactics, and used a knight in a move which is widespread in chess tournament practice. He said that at this stage in the game the whites are regarded as having a certain advantage. The match, which will be televised in ten minute programmes twice a week, will last until March, according to Karpov - but the West Germans forecast a somewhat quicker end.
