  • Description

Increased security measures were taken for a two day visit to Calcutta by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on Monday and Tuesday (March 1 and 2 ).

Authorities imposed the tighter precautions because of the escape by 46 Naxalites from a gaol in Calcutta last week. The escapees were still at large during Mrs. Gandhi's visit and it was feared they could have triggered off violent scenes.

The Naxalites - who have taken their name from the violent peasant uprising in Naxalbari in the late sixties - escaped from the goal when some of their supporters blasted a hole in the prison wall.

On the second day of her visit (2 March) Mrs. Gandhi addressed an open air rally but people were kept at least 100 yards (100 metres) form the platform.

In her speech the Prime Minister repeatedly said there could be no return to the days before the eight month old emergency last year when "people mistook their freedom for licence".

Referring to criticism of her government from abroad she said that it was not bound to give any explanation to anyone - either west or east - for the manner in which it conducted its affairs.
