  • Description

Envoys from the United Kingdom and the United States have arrived in Tanzania from Mozambique for discussions on Rhodesia with government officials and political leaders.

SYNOPSIS: The British Under Secretary for Foreign Affairs, John Graham and Stephen Low from the United States arrived in Dar Es Salaam after visiting Mozambique where they had held talks on the Rhodesia situation with Robert Mugabe, co-President of the Patriotic Front. Mr. Mugabe has described the discussions as "a failure".

Before the talks in Mozambique, they had been in Salisbury, where they failed to convince members of the Executive Council of the need to attend a proposed conference on the future of Rhodesia.

In Tanzania, the envoys held talks with the Executive Secretary of the Organisation of African Unity Liberation Committee, Colonel Hashim Mbita, before going on to meet the Tanzanian Foreign Minister Mr. Benjamin Mkapa. They briefed both on their talks in Mozambique and with Mr. Ian Smith and his colleagues in the interim government in Salisbury.

After these talks the envoys were due to fly to Zambia on Saturday (17 June) for further briefings on the progress of moves to set up the conference.
