  • Description

Albertville, North-east Katanga, in the Congo Republic, presented a peaceful scene July 27 after Belgian troops disarmed and demobilised Force Publique men, and normal activities began at this important commercial centre. Ships were loaded to cross Lake Tanganyika and trains were preparing to leave; Albertville is a terminal of the CFL, a railway line that takes Congo produce to the outside world.

Significantly, in the main square by King Albert's statue, flew the newly-designed flag of the Katanga Republic - a state that has seceded from the Congo Republic under the direction of Moishe Tshombe, former provincial Premier, now self-proclaimed President. So far, no nation - not even Belgium - has recognised an autonomous Katanga yet it is generally agreed that Mr. Tshombe's government exists solely through the support of Belgian troops on the spot.

Should Katanga's independent existence end, the end may well begin in the Albertville area. Mr. Tshombe's Conakat Party has little support here - a stronghold of the Balubakat-Cartel parties, July 28, 15 deputies walked out of the Katanga Assembly in Elizabethville, opposing the existing "government of fantasy", demanding return to a united Congo, and the dropping of Katanga's flag.
