  • Description

In the flooded Bekasi district east of Djakarta, Indonesia, more than 100,000 people have been made homeless and some 59,000 acres of rice-fields are under water. Damage has been even more extensive elsewhere.

Thirty villages have been damaged, and emergency action has been taken by the Government and the Military to evacuate the villagers and rush badly needed rice, saltfish and sugar to alleviate the distress.

The heavy rains have also caused breaks totalling more than 600 yards in embankments of the fast-running Tjitarum River, sweeping away railway lines and cutting off communications.

In the midst of desolation and misery, however, children, too young to realise the havoc, took advantage of the "swimming pools" in the backyard ... and there was some profitable fishing too in the proverbially troubled waters !
