    ARGENTINA YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) COMPLETED ITS FIRST HUMAN HEART TRANSPLANT OPERATION SUCCESSFULLY AT A PRIVATE CLINIC NEAR BUENOS AIRES.

    THE SURGICAL TEAM, LED BY DR. MIGUEL BELLIZI, TOOK ABOUT FOUR HOURS TO COMPLETE THE OPERATION.

    THE PATIENT, SENOR PEDRO ENRIQUE SERRANO, A 54-YEAR-OLD TRAVELLING SALESMAN, WAS GIVEN FOUR DAYS TO LIVE BEFORE HE RECEIVED HIS NEW HEART FROM THE DONOR, EMILIO TOMASERRI, WHO DIED OF A BRAIN HAEMORRHAGE ON THURSDAY (30 MAY).

    DR. BELLIZI TOLD REPORTERS LATER THAT THE OPERATION WAS DELAYED FOR SEVERAL HOURS BECAUSE OF LEGAL PROBLEMS CONCERNING THE DONOR. ALSO AT THE LANDS CLINIC YESTERDAY WAS MRS. SERRANO.

    THE OPERATION WAS THE SECOND HEART TRANSPLANT TO BE PERFORMED IN LATIN AMERICA. THE FIRST WAS CARRIED OUT IN BRAZIL LAST SUNDAY (26 MAY).

    THE LATEST BULLETIN ON SENOR SERRANO SAID HE WAS MAKING "SLOW PROGRESS". DR. BELLIZI CONFIRMED THAT THE PATIENT HAD SUFFERED A BRAIN INJURY WHICH WAS SLOWING HIS RECOVERY. BUT THE INJURY SHOULD NOT, HE ADDED, GIVE CAUSE FOR CONCERN.
