TRANSCRIPT OF SPEECH
PEREZ DE CUELLAR: "I have great pleasure to announce today the first appointment of a woman as Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, subject to budgetary approved by the General Assembly. Mrs. Lucy Meir, presently Assistant Secretary-General for Women's Development at UNICEF, will be the Secretary-General of the international conference on the future of Palestine. (applause). I do not believe that any society or any international organisation can make lasting progress if it does not harness the energies of both men and women and if it does not enlist their equal participation. It is a testimony to the courage and determination of women that, in spite of the hardships that they especially bear, they are playing an increasingly important role in the progress and survival of their society. The contributions that women bring to the collective life are...(indistinct)... gaining recognition in diverse cultures. This denotes a fundamental change in the human consciousness. Let us, on this day, resolve that this change is fully reflected in the whole scope of our daily life and work. Thank you."
