  • Description

IN JAPAN THEY CALL IT THE "BEAN" FESTIVAL, BUT IT REALLY MARKS THE PARTING OF THE SEASON - THE END OF THE COLD SEASON AND THE DAWN OF SPRING. (FEBRUARY 4).

THE SYMBOLIC PART OF THE CELEBRATIONS IS THE THROWING OF BEANS TO DRIVE AWAY DEVILS AND TO USHER IN GOOD LUCK. AND THE JAPANESE BELIEVE THAT LUCK WILL BE THEIRS IF THEY COLLECT BEANS THROWN BY IMPORTANT PEOPLE.

NO WONDER 40,000 JAPANESE ASSEMBLED AT THE IKEGAMI TEMPLE WEST OF TOKYO ALONE - A SCENE REPEATED IN ALL THE 326 SHRINES IN TOKYO. IT WAS ESTIMATED THAT MORE THAN 700,000 PEOPLE ATTENDED THE BEAN FESTIVAL ALL OVER THE JAPANESE CAPITAL.

PEOPLE BELIEVE THAT THE NEW SEASON BEGINS WITH UNCERTAINTY AND FEAR AND IN ORDER TO GUARD AGAINST THIS AND TO TRANSFORM THE SITUATION INTO ONE OF HAPPINESS AND JOY, THEY MUST ARM THEMSELVES WITH THE PRECIOUS BEANS -- THE ARMOUR AGAINST EVILS AND THE HARBINGER OF GOOD LUCK.

BUT AS ALL FESTIVALS ARE, THE BEAN FESTIVAL IS ALSO ASSOCIATED WITH THE SEASONS IN JAPAN -- THE "SETSUBUN", AS THEY CALL IT, MARKS THE END OF THE WINTER AND NATURALLY THERE ARE CELEBRATIONS TO USHER IN SUMMER AND WITH IT HAPPINESS.

THE PRIESTS ARE THERE TO DISTRIBUTE THE BEANS -- AND TO ADD GLAMOUR THE BENEVOLENT DISTRIBUTORS INCLUDE MISS TOKYO AND A WRESTLING CHAMPION ... ALL OF THEM CONTRIBUTING THEIR MITE TO KEEP ALIVE AN OLD TRADITION IN JAPAN.
