Background: Pope Paul continued his visit to the Philippines today visually none the worse for the assassination attempt at Manila airport on his arrival yesterday (Friday). A Bolivian painter, dressed as a priest, lunged at the Pope with a knife, but was prevented from getting near the Pontiff by by-standers.

The incident happened so quickly that it took some time to sort out what had happened. The Pope was greeting officials when Bolivian painter Benjamin Mendoza Y Amor, dressed in black robes, made his attack. There are reports that President Marcos of the Philippines gave mendoza a karate chop and Cardinal Stephen Kim of South Korea pushed the man away before he could get close to the Pope.

More than 5,000 people were at Manila airport to witness the arrival of the Pope. Speaking at the airport, Pope Paul said he had come on a spiritual mission and to attend the Asian Bishop Conference being attended by more than 170 Bishops.
