Background: AN IMPORTANT GROUP OF SEVEN IMPRESSIONIST AND MODERN PAINTINGS IS DUE TO BE SOLD BY AUCTION IN NEW YORK THIS EVENING (WEDNESDAY) -- AND SOME OF THE WORKS MAY WELL SET NEW RECORD PRICES. THE COLLECTION COMPRISES THREE PAINTINGS BY RENOIR, A DEGAS, A VAN GOGH, A PISSARRO AND A BONNARD.

THE PAINTINGS COME FROM THE IMPRESSIVE COLLECTION OF GROVER A. MAGNIN, SON OF A SEAMSTRESS WHOSE SAN FRANCISCO BUSINESS GREW INTO A FAMOUS CHAIN OF STORES. MR. MAGNIN, A SAN FRANCISCO CULTURAL LEADER, DIED IN MARCH THIS YEAR.

THE TWO MOST OUTSTANDING PAINTINGS IN THE SALE ARE EDGAR DEGAS' "DANSEUSE SUR LA POINTE (PREMIER SUJET)" ("DANCER ON THE POINTS OF HER TOES,--FIRST VERSION"), PAINTED ABOUT 1878, AND RENOIR'S "FEMME EN JUPE ROUGE S'ESSUYANT LES PIEDS" ("WOMAN IN RED SKIRT WASHING HER FEET") OF ABOUT 1888.

THE HIGHEST PRICE EVER PAID FOR A DEGAS WAS 410,000 DOLLARS (ABOUT GBP170,500 STERLING) IN 1965 -- AT NEW YORK'S PARKE-BERNET GALLERIES WHERE THE CURRENT AUCTION IS TO BE HELD. IT IS EXPECTED THAT HIS GOUACHE AND PASTEL STUDY OF THE BALLET DANCER MAY BRING AN EVEN HIGHER BID.

AND WHILE THE RENOIR IS UNLIKELY TO EQUAL THE 1,550,000 DOLLARS (ABOUT GBP644,800 STERLING) WORLD RECORD PRICE FETCHED BY ONE OF THE PAINTER'S MASTERPIECES LAST AUTUMN, IT WILL COMMAND A FIGURE ASTRONOMICALLY HIGHER THAN THE MERE THOUSAND FRANCS AT WHICH THE PAINTER ORIGINALLY SOLD IT IN 1891.

THE TWO OTHER RENOIRS IN THE SALE ARE "JARDIN DES TUILERIES" ("GARDEN OF THE TUILERIES") OF 1874 AND "L'ESCALIER, ALGIERS" ("STAIRWAY, ALGIERS") DATING FROM ABOUT 1882.

VINCENT VAN GOGH'S "ZINNIAS DANS UN VASE"("ZINNIAS IN A VASE") IS ONE OF THE FEW IMPORTANT WORKS BY THIS ARTIST TO APPEAR IN A PUBLIC AUCTION IN RECENT YEARS. ANOTHER RECORD BID IS JUST CONCEIVABLE FOR THIS PAINTING.

CAMILLE PISSARRO IS REPRESENTED BY "LE JARDIN DE PONTOISE" ("THE GARDEN AT PONTOISE"), A PAINTING FORMERLY IN THE COLLECTION OF AMERICAN ARTIST MARY CASSATT, WHO WAS LARGELY RESPONSIBLE FOR INTRODUCING THE IMPRESSIONIST MOVEMENT TO THE UNITED STATES.

THE SEVENTH PAINTING IS A MAGNIFICENT STUDY BY PIERRE BONNARD, "FEMME ACCOUDEE AVEC CHIEN ET NATURE MORTE" ("WOMAN RESTING ON HER ELBOW, WITH DOG AND STILL LIFE"), WHICH DATES FROM 1917.
