Background: The Duke of Edinburgh - accompanying Queen Elizabeth on a five-day visit to Denmark - attended the handing over of the Erasmus Prize at Oddfellow House in Copenhagen. The Duke arrived with King Frederick of Denmark.
Established two years ago, the Prize is awarded for social and cultural work. This year's Prize was presented by Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands.
One of two painters to share the GBP10,000 award was 71-year-old Marc Chagall, Russian-born but now living in France. The other artist to gain this honour was born in Austria, but is a naturalised Englishman - 74-year-old Oscar Kokoschka.
