Jamie Rios of Panama, in the white shorts, came to Japan with a string of 21 victories, 3 defeats and a draw. The 24-year-old Negro was expected to be a tough opponent for Gushiken, who's undefeated and has won 13 professional fights, eight of them through knock-outs.
It was Gushiken, swollen over both eyes, who in the seventh round knocked down Rios with a flurry of right and left blows, for a mandatory eight count.
In the 13th round Gushiken, who had been concentrating on body blows for most of the fight, had slowed the challenger down and the Japanese southpaw began to outpunch the Panamanian at will. It was two minutes 59 seconds into the round when Gushiken got his knock-out after driving rios on to the ropes.
For Gushiken it was his fifth defence of the title and he remains undefeated. Afterwards he said Rios was tough and "I couldn't fight my way until the 10th round. I want to concentrate on Rios's body, but he had a tight defence", Gushiken said.
