    Prince Norodom Sihanouk, deposed head of state of the Khmer Republic (formerly Cambodia) arrived in Hanoi on Thursday (6 April) after a tour of more than a month in areas of the Republic held by forces loyal to him.

    He and his wife, Monique were greeted at Hanoi's Gia Lam Airport by North Vietnamese Premier Phan Van Dong, Defence Minister General Vo Nguyan Giap, Foreign Minister Nguyen Duy Trinh and Hoan Quoc Viet, chief delegate of the Fatherlands Front.

    More than 1,000 people were gathered at the airport as the plane arrived, from an undisclosed place near the North Vietnam/Khmer border. According to North Vietnamese official sources, the Prince, who head a Khmer government-in-exile in Peking, The People's Republic of China, spent more than 45 days meeting with leaders of various guerrilla groups throughout the 80 per cent of the Khmer Republic held by anti-government forces. This was denied by the official government in Phnom Penh.

    His visit to Hanoi for a week before returning to Peking came amid rumours that he would soon return to the Republic for good, to establish a rival administration to that of Khmer President General Lon Nol
    SYNOPSIS: In Hanoi, North Vietnam last week, top North Vietnamese leaders greeted the arrival of Prince Norodom Sihanouk, deposed leader of the Khmer Republic. Premier Phan Van Dong was the first to great the prince after his plane touched down at Hanoi's Gia Lam Airport.

    Official North Vietnamese sources said Prince Sihanouk flew to Hanoi from an undisclosed site on the Khmer/North Vietnam border. The sources said he spent forty-five days in the Republic visiting guerrilla groups loyal to him in the areas of the country under anti-government control. The official Lon Nol regime in Phnom Pehn denied this.

    He was greeted by most of the top North Vietnamese leaders -- Defence Minister General Vo Nguyen Giap, Foreign Minister Nguyen Duy Trinh and chief of the Fatherland Front, Hoan quoc Viet. The Prince was due to hold several meetings with officials in North Vietnam before returning to The People's Republic of China, site of his government-in-exile.
