  • Description

A factory badly damaged by the recent Amman fighting between Government and guerrilla troops has been demolished by Jordanian army engineers.

The burnt-out factory, adjacent to Amman's Intercontinental Hotel, had produced jersey-knit products until damaged during fighting in the city, but was later declared unsafe.

After police had warned the public of the necessary demolition by explosives, army engineers moved in on Tuesday morning (27 October) and began work. Onlookers were kept at a safe distance, and occupiers of nearby building took the precaution of keeping windows open.

Explosive charges were fired and, when the dust cloud had settled, army bulldozers moved in to clear the rubble. No damage was caused to other property.
