Background: British paratroops landed in Ammon, capital of Jordon, July 17-18, to prop up the wilting monarchy of King Hussein after last week's assassination of his cousin, the young King Feisal of Iraq, next door.
The paratroops - of the Second Battalion Parachute Regiment - totalling 2000 flew in From Cyprus, at the request of King Hussein who was reportedly on the brink of being overthrown by a coup, similar to the revolt to Iraq, tinderbox of the Middle East, four days earlier.
With the arrival of the paratroops, King Hussein said he felt considerably more confident. Shortly afterwards he appealed to the United States for troops.
The paratroops are quartered on Ammon airfield. Supplies are being flown in. Only a few paratroops moved off the airfield. In fact, the King and his advisers now are hopeful that the paratroops will keep out of the capital. According to reports they fear that the sight of British troops will incite trouble.
While the troops were confined to the airfield, plans by King Hussein to attack the military junta in control in Baghdad were shelved. It was on the condition that Jordon troops would not be used in Iraq that Britain decided to fly to her troops.
Meanwhile the military junta in the new Iraqi Republic consolidated its position. On July 19 Iraq signed a military alliance with President Nasser's United Arab Republic -the M???uoco of Arab Nationalism.
Yesterday, July 20, King Hussein broke off diplomatic relations with the CAR.
