Aboard the aircraft carrier HMS "Eagle", of the British Navy, the Captain-General of the Fourth Military District of Spain, Lt. Gen. Don Pablo Martin Alonso, and the Civil Governor of Barcelona, accompanied by other Spanish Naval, Military and civic authorities, went to an air-naval demonstration twelve miles off Barcelona.
After driving along the deck of the British carrier, these dignitaries reviewed a guard of honour drawn from the Royal Marine contingent and watched the demonstration.
With Admiral Bingley, Commander of the British ships, the visitors saw fighter planes take-off in rapid succession, among them jet interceptors, jet fighters and anti-submarine aircraft.
Using a Westland helicopter the Royal Navy demonstrated a salvage operation a few yards from the "Eagle". Then fighter planes attacked a target being towed by a destroyer, firing cannon shells and rockets.
The purpose of this exercise was to show the possible co-ordination that can be achieved between air and sea bourne craft.
