President and Mrs. Nixon held a State banquet at the White House on Saturday (24 October) to mark the 25th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. It was attended by 31 foreign dignitaries, the largest number ever to dine at the executive mansion.
Among the guests was President Nicolae Ceausescu of Rumania, the first Communist leader to be an official guest of the Nixon administration. Mr. Nixon flew to Rumania last year in the first official visit to a Communist nation by any American President.
Several of the guests at the banquet held talks with President Nixon on the Middle East the following day. They included Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia and Archbishop Makarios, the President of Cyprus.
Several leaders, including the United Nations Secretary-General U Thant, did not accept invitations to the banquet. It coincided with a gala concert in the General Assembly which was the climax of the celebration to mark the U.N. anniversary.
