  • Description

HELICOPTERS ON WEDNESDAY FLEW AN AUSTRALIAN UNIT FROM THE TROUBLED BORDER AREA OF SARAWAK OUT TO THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER H.M.S.ALBION, THEN IMMEDIATELY RETURNED TO THE BORDER TAKING WITH THEM MEN OF THE GURKHA 2/10TH REGIMENT.THE HELICOPTERS SHUTTLED BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN THE CARRIER AND THE TROUBLED BORDER FOR MOST OF THE DAY.

THE OPERATION WAS TIMED SO THAT THE BORDER WAS NEVER LEFT UNATTENDED.AS THE HEAVILY-LADEN AUSTRALIANS LEAPT ON TO THE FLIGHT DECK FROM THE HELICOPTERS, LINES OF STERN-FACED GURKHA SOLDIERS MARCHED UP TO TAKE THEIR SEATS.THE HELICOPTER WAS IN THE AIR AGAIN WITHIN MINUTES, AND SHORTLY AFTERWARDS THE GURKHAS WERE TAKING UP THE BORDER POSITIONS ONLY RECENTLY VACATED BY THE AUSTRALIANS.

IT IS ONLY THE SECOND TIME THIS OPERATION HAS BEEN ATTEMPTED IN THE AREA - AND OFFICERS SAY THAT IT WENT OFF WITHOUT A FLAW.H.M.S.ALBION'S HELICOPTERS WERE GUIDED BY BRITISH ROYAL AIR FORCE PILOTS FROM KUCHING - MEN WHO ARE WELL VERSED ON THE HAZARDS OF FLYING IN THIS DISTRICT.THEY ACTED AS NAVIGATORS.

FOR THE AUSTRALIANS IT WAS A DAY OF JOY.THE SHORT HELICOPTER LIFT WAS THE FIRST STEP ON THEIR JOURNEY HOME.THEY HAD BEEN IN THE JUNGLE FOR FOUR MONTHS.NOW, AFTER A BRIEF REST AT TERENDAK CAMP IN MALACCA IT'S BACK HOME TO WIVES AND SWEETHEARTS...
