YESTERDAY THE FRENCH LEADER WAS TOURING SOUTHERN RUMANIA. HE RECEIVED AN ADULATORY RECEPTION FROM CROWDS LINING THE ROUTE AS HE TRAVELLED FROM CRAIOVA TO THE CAPITAL, BUCHAREST.

    PRESIDENT DE GAULLE WILL LEAVE BUCHAREST AT 1800 GMT TONIGHT -- ABOUT 24 HOURS EARLIER THAN HAD BEEN SCHEDULED. IN EXPLAINING HIS DECISION TO RUMANIAN LEADERS THIS MORNING, PRESIDENT DE GAULLE SAID: "FRANCE HAS MANY STUDENTS WHO DO NOT PURSUE THEIR STUDIES..... AN OVERWHELMING NUMBER.... AND THEN IT HAPPENED."
    IN CRAIOVA PRESIDENT DE GAULLE MADE A TWO-HOUR TOUR OF FACTORIES. ON THE JOURNEY BACK FROM CRAIOVA HE PAUSED WITH RUMANIAN PRESIDENT CEAUSESCU IN SLATINA, WHERE HE WAS INVITED TO TASTE A TRADITIONAL OFFERING OF BREAD AND SALT. HE ALSO SPENT SOME TIME LOOKING OVER AN ALUMINIUM FACTORY OUTSIDE SLATINA, WHERE HE SPOKE TO WORKMEN AND ACKNOWLEDGED THE GREETINGS OF A WARMLY RESPONSIVE CROWD.
